Cristian Romero ‘can pack his bags now’ after new Tottenham reveal

Cristian Romero could be on his way out of Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

The Argentina international has spent a large period of this campaign on the sidelines through a lengthy injury issue, suffered in December.

Since returning in March, the 26-year-old has made four appearances for the Lilywhites, failing to contribute to a single clean sheet under Ange Postecoglou.

Looking ahead to the summer, it could prove to be the end of the road for the centre-back who has been heavily linked with an exit.

Romero has phone call ahead of Tottenham exit

There is no doubt that the ex-Atalanta man is one of Spurs’ best players, but has struggled to show that consistently this campaign.

Alongside Micky van de Ven, the Argentine has formed a positive pairing which could soon be broken up in the summer.

Romero has already been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer after closely tracking him [Lyall Thomas, 25 March].

The Spanish giants are working on a deal, taking the next step as Diego Simeone recently spoke to his fellow Argentine on the phone, according to Sacha Tavolieri (31 March).

The Atleti head coach considers the defender as his top transfer priority regardless of the Lilywhites’ £67million valuation ahead of the summer.

This development could prove to be the final straw for the former Juventus ace, who could be ready to pack his bags in North London.

Tottenham can green light Romero exit

Realistically, if a player of the Argentina international’s standard is seeking out a move, Spurs are better off letting him go in the summer.

Romero has often been slammed for his commitment in terms of national duty which came to a head in the most recent break.

As a result, a large section of the Lilywhites’ fan base would welcome the sale of the centre-back, who could bring in a large sum to spend moving forward.

It will be interesting to know if a new option will be brought in as a replacement or if Kevin Danso will be given the opportunity to prove himself.
