Bryan King has urged Tottenham to ditch their pursuit of Dominic Solanke and instead try and sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

The ex-Spurs scout feels that Watkins is the kind of signing the club needs to make to go to the next level under Ange Postecoglou.

It comes after a report from talkSPORT (21 May) revealed that Spurs are interested in AFC Bournemouth forward Solanke with Postecoglou willing to let Richarlison leave this summer.

But King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - doesn't understand why the club are not aiming higher.

"If Tottenham receive a big-money offer from Saudi Arabia for Richarlison, then I would suggest they sell him," King said.

"And if they're looking at Solanke, then why aren't they looking at Watkins?

"That has got to be the type of player they are targeting if they want to go to the next level."

Ollie Watkins would be a game-changer for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou

If Spurs were to sign Watkins, they would become title contenders.

That is how big of a singing it would be.

Luring the 28-year-old away from Villa Park could prove difficult, especially considering Unai Emery's side just beat Spurs to the UEFA Champions League.

Aston Villa, Ollie Watkins
Tottenham have been urged to sign Ollie Watkins.

However, there is no harm in trying.

Solanke would be an exciting signing, but Watkins would mark a real statement of intent.
