Tottenham to consider summer Weston McKennie transfer as Juventus asking price emerges

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Tottenham could still consider a £15million summer move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, according to Alan Hutton.

Ange Postecoglou is understood to be eager to add to his squad, especially as a number of first-team players are expected to be made available for transfer following a disappointing end to the campaign.

While attacking reinforcements appear to be the one priority, bolstering the midfield is also on the agenda and US international McKennie is available for a reported £15million having been linked with a move to North London [Football Insider, 21 June].

Although Hutton admits that he was left unconvinced by the year-old's spell in the Premier League with Leeds United, he believes the Lilywhites may be tempted to take the risk because of Juventus' low asking price.

"He's possibly worth a punt," Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

"I know I wasn't really buzzing about it when he looked like he would possibly go to Aston Villa but I think what happened with myself was that I remembered what he was like when he was at Leeds.

"I know it was a struggling team, I know they got relegated and under Jesse Marsch, it didn't quite work for him but he has in fairness gone back to Juventus and had a really good season.

"He went back to Juventus and played a decent amount of games so it could possibly be something they look at.

"I think he suits a bigger team where he can get on the ball, drive about, he can make tackles, start attacks and different things like that. When you've got the better players, with no disrespect to Leeds, around him he becomes a better player.

"So that sort of price tag, it could be something that they look at."

Will Tottenham sign Weston McKennie in summer transfer window under Daniel Levy?

Spurs' midfield was fairly impressive last season, but with European now back on the agenda next season, Postecoglou is going to need some added options to ensure his side can compete on all fronts.

A deal to bring Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray to Elland Road appears to be getting closer [David Ornstein, 30 June] but he is inexperienced in the top flight and the Lilywhites cannot afford to rely on him adapting to the Premier League quickly.

If Juventus' reported asking price for McKennie is correct, it could well be a gamble worth taking for Spurs as the international would offer Postecoglou an experienced rotation option if nothing else.

Whether or not this deal will happen this summer remains incredibly unclear at this stage, but it could be a transfer that advances very quickly once the Premier League's PSR deadline passes.
