Steven Gerrard has emerged as a shock contender to be the new Tottenham manager after being sacked from Al-Ettifaq.

Despite back-to-back victories over Elsborg and Brentford recently, Ange Postecoglou is still facing pressure from the passionate fanbase at Hotspur Way, with Spurs sitting 14th in the Premier League.

The Australian is the odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked [SkyBet], and a line of potential successors seems to be lining up in North London for Daniel Levy to choose from.

Thomas Frank, Andoni Iraola and Mauricio Pochettino are the likeliest trio to become that appointment, but having parted ways with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, BetVictor have priced Gerrard at 16/1 to be the next manager.

Steven Gerrard to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham?

Leaving Al-Ettifaq just five points above the relegation zone in the Saudi Pro League before being sacked, Levy should already know everything he needs to about Gerrard.

He has ultimately failed in his two quests after winning a Scottish League title with Rangers, last under a year as Aston Villa boss before searching for a new challenge in the Middle East.

That has clearly not worked out for the former Liverpool star, which begs the question why he is being linked with a move to North London, even if Postecoglou is under pressure.

The biggest problem that would face Levy if he did pull the trigger on Postecoglou's time at Hotspur Way would be attempting to find someone who can fill his boots, play exciting football and deal with the current injury issues.

Radu Dragusin's season-ending injury has just been confirmed, which is a massive blow, though the return of Micky van de Ven and the signing of Kevin Danso certainly alleviates some of that pressure.

With Spurs struggling to climb the Premier League table, the pressure on Postecoglou is warranted, but there is still potential for the team to finish the season with silverware.
