Tottenham: Micky van de Ven wanted man as 'phenomenal' summer transfer verdict emerges

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven will already have teams "watching" him because of his "phenomenal" performances in North London, according to Alan Hutton.

The Dutchman has enjoyed an excellent first season at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, forming a solid defensive partnership with Cristian Romero as Tottenham continue to push for the Champions League places.

Van de Ven helped Postecoglou's side secure all three points in their win over Nottingham with an "outstanding" left-footed strike, with some pundits even drawing comparisons with Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

While Hutton admits the 22-year-old's exploits will have attracted interest from other teams ahead of the summer transfer window, he believes the centre-back will want to continue his career in North London for the foreseeable future.

"He is outstanding, I mean what a footballer," Hutton told Tottenham News.

"His pace is phenomenal for a centre-back, you just don't expect him to have that. Just the way that he comes out from the back, the way he plays with the ball and like I said he's a leader, he talks and you can see him organising the back four.

"I think there will always be teams watching these types of players at a good age when they've got room to improve even more. The biggest compliment I think I can give him is you can see how much you miss him when he doesn't play.

"When he's not there they look a little bit all over the place defensively so he's been an outstanding buy. I think he'll want to continue where he is from now on. He has a lot of time on his hands, there's lots of football for him to play in the future.

"But for now, he looks very settled."

Will Tottenham sell Micky van de Ven during the summer transfer window?

Van de Ven, like a number of young players in Spurs' side currently, will always have Europe's elite clubs keeping an eye on him given his excellent start to life in the Premier League, but that doesn't mean he'll be going anywhere.

The 22-year-old only joined Postecoglou's side in the summer and while he has taken to English football like a duck to water, his age and relative lack of experience means that he won't be in a hurry to make the next step in his career.

Spurs' good financial position also means that Postecoglou and Daniel Levy will be in no rush to sell the Dutch international.

His contract in North London doesn't expire until 2029 so it would take more than a pretty penny to temp Spurs into selling one of their best players.
