Tottenham Hotspur supporters have had very little to cheer about this season, at risk of their lowest league finish since the early 1990s.

Ange Postecoglou sees his entire Spurs story defined by how his team fare in the Europa League between now and the end of the season, with nothing else at stake.

The Australian has seen several senior players let him down at crucial periods of the season, with memorable away wins against both Manchester clubs and a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg success over Liverpool now redundant, distant memories.

Harry Kane return update emerges

Postecoglou's extent of managing Harry Kane at Tottenham only went as far as a brief stint in pre-season before 2023-24 began.

The iconic former captain has continued his fearsome goalscoring reputation at Bayern Munich, where in the Bundesliga he is now within touching distance of his first major career honour at the age of 31.

Due to Spurs' dreadful season and Kane not getting any younger, rumours have surfaced of the clauses in his contract to potentially pave the way to a return to N17 further down the line.

Sky Sports' established Bundesliga correspondent Florian Plettenburg (1 April) posted on X to deliver an update on the agreement for Kane to possibly rejoin Tottenham later in his career.

"The possibility of returning to Spurs at some point was already agreed upon when he joined Bayern – but that is not a topic at the moment either," Plettenburg said, dismissing any talk of a return this summer with Kane fully focused on Bayern.

Having scored 280 goals for Spurs and already 77 in 83 appearances in Bavaria, Kane elevated his record England tally to 71 in the recent international break in his home city.

Tottenham can still attract top players by winning Europa League

Tottenham and Daniel Levy know that the ability has not yet disintegrated to be able to bring the top talent to the Lilywhites in the summer.

To win the Europa League would seal passage to the Champions League, and an ironic statistic is that the last time Spurs lifted a major trophy in 2008, it coincided with their last bottom-half Premier League finish.

It may not be a return for Kane on the cards this summer, but Spurs will undoubtedly be in the market for some of the highest-calibre players across the globe if they can overcome Eintracht Frankfurt and two further opponents to get their hands on the Europa League trophy.

Whether they can compete financially for them with Levy at the helm is another matter entirely, and one which often consumes the majority of Tottenham fans as they attempt to envisage a successful future.
