Rio Ferdinand joked Tottenham should face an "inquiry" to determine how they were able to sign Lucas Bergvall ahead of Manchester United.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports (15 January, 8:45pm), Ferdinand joked he would lead an investigation of his own to find out how the 18-year-old Swede ended up at Spurs rather than at Old Trafford.

Bergvall started against Arsenal on Wednesday (15 January) and was the only member of Ange Postecoglou's midfield not to be hooked at half-time, seeing out the full 90 minutes and earning praise from Ferdinand.

Ferdinand said in jest: “I’m doing an enquiry at the moment, just to see what’s happened there."

Lucas Bergvall fast becoming undroppable for Tottenham

It's unlikely that if Postecoglou had a fully-fit squad at his disposal for the majority of this season, Bergvall would have received anything like the minutes he's been given in the Spurs midfield so far.

However, the teenager has rarely looked out of place in the Lilywhites' engine room, as was made clear by Postecoglou's actions at half-time of their North London Derby defeat on Wednesday Night.

The Australian's decision to hook the much more experienced Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr spoke volumes about Bergvall's current standing in Postecoglou's eyes, and that's a standing he's earned.

Bergvall's winning goal against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg has Spurs on the cusp of a first Wembley final since 2021, and could well have sent them on course for a first piece of silverware since back in 2008.

The Sweden international was just two years old back then, and despite being just 18 now, it's clear Bergvall is a player who has fast become one of the few Postecoglou can trust to deliver at the moment.
