Matheus Cunha 'transfer promise made at Wolves' amid Tottenham transfer talk

Paul Robinson

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson played 175 times for Tottenham between 2004 and 2008, winning the League Cup with Spurs in the 2007/08 season. Since hanging up his gloves in 2017, Robinson has moved into the world of punditry and can be regularly seen or heard on Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live. Tottenham News is now delighted to present Robinson as part of its team of experts.

Vitor Pereira will have been given "assurances" about Matheus Cunha's future before becoming Wolves manager amid interest from Tottenham, Paul Robinson has speculated.

According to The Times, Wolves are locked in talks over a "lucrative" contract for the Brazilian star, with Spurs potentially set to miss out on the 25-year-old's signature in this transfer window.

Cunha has attracted plenty of interest from outside of Molineux, with Ange Postecoglou's side credited with keeping tabs on the forward, who has 10 goals and four assists in 19 matches this season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: "Look, he's a fantastic player but I don't think Wolves can afford to let him go. They let Kilman and Neto go at the start of the season and you can see the impact that's had.

"Hiring Vitor Pereira, they've given themselves every chance of staying in the league because he's an excellent manager, and will have been given assurances that he'd have Cunha until the end of the season.

Tottenham to miss out on Matheus Cunha transfer?

"With the contract talk, I don't think it'll be long until he's signed. But he's certainly a player that a lot of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, would take. Absolutely."

Wolves have not yet officially announced a new deal for their 25-year-old star, who joined the club on a four-year deal in 2022 [BBC Sport].

With Dominic Solanke, Son Heung-min, Timo Werner and Mikey Moore all capable of playing through the middle, Richarlison too when fully recovered, it remains to be seen how Cunha would fit into the team.

Scoring and creating goals has not been an issue for Postecoglou's side this season, with conceding goals more of an issue to be addressed during the winter transfer window.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies all being sidelined has left the manager short of options in defence, which suggests a new defender is far more pressing.
