Jamie Carragher makes Accrington Stanley accusation after Tottenham thrashing

Tottenham put up less of a fight than Accrington Stanley against Liverpool on Thursday night, Jamie Carragher has said.

Spurs failed to register a shot on target as they drowned to a 4-1 aggregate defeat despite heading to Merseyside ahead in the tie (6 February).

Arne Slot's side now face Newcastle United in the Wembley final while Ange Postecoglou's men are left to lick their wounds having been steamrolled at Anfield.

Carragher makes Accrington Stanley jibe

The Sky Sports live punditry panel (6 February, 22:23) wasted no time in tearing into the toothless Tottenham outfit.

Jamie Redknapp was disappointed by Spurs as he watched his two former clubs do battle, with only one side appearing to adequately fight their corner.

Carragher went as far as to say League Two strugglers Accrington, who also lost 4-0 at Anfield in the FA Cup third round on 11 January, threatened Liverpool more dangerously.

Redknapp said: "I'm under no illusions, I don't think anyone really expected Tottenham to win tonight, but I thought they'd lay a glove on them and make things difficult, but they were never in the game."

Carragher responded: "[There was] a cup tie Liverpool played a few weeks ago in the FA Cup, against Accrington Stanley.

"Liverpool didn't play their best team, don't get me wrong, but they gave more than Tottenham to try and cause Liverpool a problem in the game. That's not right."

Tottenham have FA Cup and Europa League to save season

Tottenham have utterly floundered in the league, be it by several different factors both in and out of their control.

Injuries have taken away the safety net for Postecoglou, while his tactics along with Daniel Levy's reluctance to delve into the elite-level wages have certainly not helped.

Spurs will approach this Sunday's FA Cup tie with Aston Villa (9 February) as underdogs and should they be eliminated, it would be three days that suddenly have the season hanging by a thread.

To be knocked out of both domestic cups within 72 hours is disastrous, regardless of the standard of the opponents, and the Europa League alongside Premier League dignity are all that remains.

The drawing board is a massive one for Levy if matters continue to decline for Tottenham in the final months of the campaign.
