Harry Redknapp reacts to Postecoglou sack news at Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou potentially being on the verge of the sack at Tottenham Hotspur has come as no surprise to Harry Redknapp.

Postecoglou is fast running out of time to save his job in North London after a dismal season of results for Spurs, who have faltered massively in all three domestic competitions they've played in this term.

Tottenham are still alive in the Europa League ahead of a two-legged quarter-final tie with Eintracht Frankfurt next month, but that represents their only realistic chance of ending their season on a high.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Fulham was Tottenham's 15th from 29 Premier League fixtures this term – losing more than 50 per cent of their matches – and that form has left Postecoglou in a precarious position.

If Postecoglou's side can go all the way in the Europa League – and fulfil his promise of winning a trophy in the Australian's second season – he'll become the first Spurs manager to lift a trophy since Redknapp.

That 2008 League Cup has arguably been a millstone, and speaking to talkSPORT (17 March, 3:08pm), Redknapp discussed the prospect of Tottenham's season coming down to the Europa League or bust.

Redknapp said: “I suppose he does [have to win the Europa League] really to be perfectly truthful.

"When he got the job last year, I was pulling for Ange, I [thought] he’d be the man for the job – I liked what I’d seen of him, I thought he’d be great.

"It just hasn’t worked out – they’ve had injuries and whatever – but it’s been a poor season, we have to be truthful, and it’s all reliant now really on winning this competition, which still I think they should win.”

Postecoglou prospects look bleak at Tottenham

Even if Tottenham do manage to go all the way to Bilbao in May, beating Frankfurt and either Bodo/Glimt or Lazio to get there, a first continental trophy since 1984 won't mask their woeful domestic displays.

Sitting a lowly 14th in the Premier League table and having exited both the EFL and FA Cups within three days of each other last month, Spurs will have to pull off a European miracle to save face this season.

Though Tottenham are planning on holding a review of Postecoglou's future prospects at the end of the campaign with the possibility of retaining him, he's surely run out of lives after 15 league defeats alone.

The feel-good displays Spurs have managed to serve up on the continent this term have rarely translated to their week-to-week performances, and it's difficult to see where this leaves them going forward.
