Danny Murphy has been left baffled by a Tottenham fan saying Ange Postecoglou's squad is "depleted" ahead of their Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool on Thursday.

Spurs are going into the second leg of the semi-final 1-0 up after they beat Arne Slot's men in the first encounter back in January.

Speaking live on talkSPORT before Ange Postecoglou's press conference, (5 February, 12:50pm), Murphy shared his thoughts on Tottenham's ranks at the moment.

“Well, he’s saying depleted right but Van de Ven will play [Ange Postecoglou later confirmed he won't play], Danso, Austrian international, you’ve got Ben Davies, Welsh international and he’ll probably go in at left-back, Spence has been playing well, midfielders are all fit, Tel, he could probably come in with Son, Richarlison there, it’s not reserves is it?” Murphy said.

“Brazilian international Richarlison with Son and Tel or Johnson or whoever, they’ve got good players.”

Tottenham need to stand their ground against Liverpool

Tottenham dug deep to win the first encounter by the slenderest of margins on home soil to give themselves a platform to build on at Anfield.

Many thought that their team was too patched together to get a result against the Premier League's leaders but they got the job done on home soil to give themselves a great chance of reaching the showpiece.

While Spurs have had plenty of issues with injuries since the start of the season, it finally feels like they're getting back to an almost full-strength starting XI which is exactly what they need to happen.

The game against Slot's men on Thursday won't matter in the league but if they managed to advance into the final or even earn another win against the Merseyside outfit, it could end up changing the context of how a hugely disappointing campaign is being viewed.

Spurs can, of course, still lift trophies in the Europa League and FA Cup but with a trophy already so tantalisingly close they will be desperate to get some silverware in the bag.
