Ange Postecoglou could regret benching James Maddison for Tottenham against Roma.

Spurs will be looking to build on their impressive 4-0 Premier League win away against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium [23 November].

They take on a Roma team without a win since October at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday [28 November].

Despite one development at the Serie A club which has caused some surprise ahead of the clash, supporters in North London will still be confident of victory considering their opponents' poor form this season.

However, Postecoglou has been handed some big injury blows ahead of the clash, with Cristian Romero unavailable while Guglielmo Vicario has been ruled out for potentially more than two months.

And with such key players unavailable, Postecoglou might have made a mistake by leaving out Maddison, a decision confirmed via Spurs' official X account [28 November].

James Maddison misses out in Tottenham XI v Roma

While Postecoglou has named a relatively strong team against Roma, he has left out Maddison, a decision which would cost him.

The 28-year-old was brilliant against City. As per Sofascore, in addition to netting twice against the Premier League champions, Maddison also succeeded with 100 per cent of his dribbles and completed 89 per cent of his passes.

He also provided two accurate long balls forward, won nine of his 13 ground duels, made two clearances, one interception, one tackle and blocked one shot.

Therefore, this might have been the perfect opportunity for Maddison to build some momentum. However, his contributions will now be limited to any potential appearance from the bench.
