Tottenham could end up paying an extra £8.7million for summer signing Micky van de Ven if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season, according to SportBILD.

The German news publication reported, via Sport Witness (18 October), that Spurs' fine form this season could end up hitting Spurs in the pockets due to incentives involved with centre-back Van de Ven.

Tottenham signed the 22-year-old Netherlands international from Wolfsburg during the summer, for a reported fee of £34.5million with £8.5million in add-ons (Sky Sports News, 8 August).

There are various clauses in the deal, and Spurs qualifying for the Champions League is one of them, meaning Wolfsburg will be keeping a close eye on the North London side's results this season.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News:

"Even with the add-ons, he is cheaper than the going rate, especially when you look at the prices Manchester City and Chelsea have been paying for players, I think you can say it has been money well spent.

"Since getting his chance he has proved he can play, he has pace, he attacks the ball, he doesn't mess around or look to be clever, he just plays it simple and he has certainly built a good partnership with Cristian Romero.

Tottenham

"If you look at the market, even for an extra £8.7million, where would you find a centre-back like him for the fee and add-ons Tottenham might have to pay? Fees are inflated and I think that the deal that has been done for Van de Ven is a good one."
