John Wenham has reacted after revealing that Nile John is close to leaving Tottenham permanently.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose shared his exclusive story via X on Monday (5 August).

John played 18 times in the Premier League 2 last season for Spurs' under-21s, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

And Wenham - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News after - believes it is the right time for the 21-year-old to move on from the club.

“I was surprised when he was handed a contract extension last summer if I'm being honest,” Wenham said.

“With the emergence of the likes of Tyrese Hall and George Abbott, I thought it was time for John to seek pastures anew.

“However he did very well last season, he put his head down and worked hard but I think it is the right time for him to move on and play first-team football elsewhere.

“Therefore, I think this will be a good move for all parties.”

Nile John ready to quit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

John has never managed to establish himself as a first-team player in North London.

Having come through the ranks at Hotspur Way the versatile midfielder has played 77 times for the club's under-21s. However, he has only managed two appearances at senior level.

With his contract set to expire next summer, the club probably felt as though this was the right time to let him go.

He doesn't appear to be on Ange Postecoglou's radar. Therefore, for John himself, a permanent transfer is probably in his best interest too.

The youngster has shown signs of promise while climbing the ranks at Tottenham, and supporters will therefore be hopeful that the club at least include a buy-back clause or a big sell-on fee in any eventual transfer.
